Description

French Onion Steak Sandwich

Ingredients:

For the Onions:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon sugar (helps with caramelization)

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ cup beef broth (or water to deglaze)

For the Steak:

  • 1 lb ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Sandwiches:

  • 4 crusty sandwich rolls or baguette halves

  • 8 slices provolone or Swiss cheese

  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)

  • Fresh thyme (optional for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the onions:
In a skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat.
Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and soft.
Deglaze with a splash of beef broth to loosen browned bits and make them extra flavorful.

  2. Cook the steak:
Season steak with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
Heat olive oil in a hot skillet or grill pan.
Sear steak 3–4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or to your liking.
Let rest 5 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain.

  3. Toast the bread:
Spread butter on sandwich rolls and toast in a skillet or under the broiler until golden.

  4. Assemble:
Place sliced steak on the bottom half of each roll.
Top with a generous pile of caramelized onions and 2 slices of cheese.
Broil open-faced for 1–2 minutes until cheese melts and bubbles.

  5. Serve:
Close the sandwich, slice in half, and sprinkle with a little fresh thyme if desired.
Serve hot with au jus or beef broth on the side for dipping — French dip style!
