Description

Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

For the Beef & Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth (or 1 cup broth + 1 cup water with bouillon)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional)

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

  • 2 tbsp butter (for richness)

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled & cubed

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • ½ cup whole milk (or heavy cream for extra richness)

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with salted water, and bring to a boil.

  2. Cook until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.

  3. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy. Cover to keep warm.

2. Cook the Beef & Gravy

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.

  2. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.

  3. Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well to coat (this makes the gravy base). Cook 1–2 minutes.

  4. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  5. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened into a rich gravy. Stir in butter for a glossy finish.

3. Serve

  1. Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates.

  2. Generously ladle beef and gravy over the top.

  3. Garnish with fresh parsley.
