Description
Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
For the Beef & Gravy:
-
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
-
1 small onion, finely chopped
-
2 garlic cloves, minced
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth (or 1 cup broth + 1 cup water with bouillon)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
-
½ tsp smoked paprika (optional)
-
Salt & black pepper, to taste
-
2 tbsp butter (for richness)
-
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
-
2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled & cubed
-
4 tbsp butter
-
½ cup whole milk (or heavy cream for extra richness)
-
Salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Make the Mashed Potatoes
-
Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with salted water, and bring to a boil.
-
Cook until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.
-
Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy. Cover to keep warm.
2. Cook the Beef & Gravy
-
In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
-
Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
-
Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well to coat (this makes the gravy base). Cook 1–2 minutes.
-
Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper.
-
Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened into a rich gravy. Stir in butter for a glossy finish.
3. Serve
-
Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates.
-
Generously ladle beef and gravy over the top.
-
Garnish with fresh parsley.
