Instructions
Prepare the Mushroom Topping
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 5-7 minutes until lightly browned, then reduce heat to low and continue cooking for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized. Remove onions and set aside.
In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes without stirring to develop a golden color. Add garlic, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce, cooking until liquid reduces by half and mushrooms are well-browned. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme, then combine with caramelized onions.
Make the Burger Patties
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, steak seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently with hands until just combined, then form into 4 patties slightly larger than your buns (they’ll shrink during cooking).
Cook the Burgers
Heat a large skillet or grill to medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, or until desired internal temperature is reached. During the last 2-3 minutes of cooking, place Swiss cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
Assembly
Toast the hamburger buns lightly. Spread garlic mayo on buns if using, place the cheese-topped burger on the bottom bun, then generously top with the mushroom and onion mixture. Add lettuce if desired and finish with the top bun.
This hearty burger delivers the perfect combination of savory flavors with its rich mushroom topping and melted Swiss cheese, creating a restaurant-quality meal that’s ready in about 30 minutes.
