Smothered Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Servings: 4
Calories: ~680 per serving
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Optional: fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Form the patties:
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.
    Shape into 4 thick patties.

  2. Cook the patties:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

  3. Make the onion gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onions and sauté for 5–6 minutes until golden and soft.
Stir in flour and cook 1 minute to form a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly until smooth and thickened.
Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste.

  4. Smother the steaks:
Return the patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over the top, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes until fully cooked through and flavors meld.

  5. Serve:
Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
