Homemade Tater Tots
Ingredients (about 4 servings)
-
2 lbs (900g) russet potatoes, peeled
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or cornstarch)
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp onion powder
-
½ tsp paprika (optional)
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
1–2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional)
-
Oil, for frying (vegetable or canola)
Instructions
-
Par-cook potatoes:
Place peeled potatoes in a pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 6 minutes only – they should be just slightly tender, not fully cooked. Drain and let cool completely. -
Grate:
Once cooled, grate potatoes on the large holes of a box grater. Spread grated potatoes on a clean towel and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. -
Season mixture:
Place grated potatoes in a bowl. Add flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix gently until combined (don’t overmix). -
Shape tots:
Scoop about 1 tablespoon of mixture and form into small cylinders (classic tot shape). Press lightly so they hold together. -
Fry:
Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 375°F (190°C). Fry tots in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. -
Serve:
Sprinkle with extra salt while hot. Serve with ketchup, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce.
