Rustic Cast Iron Apple Crisp

Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven:
    Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 10-inch cast iron skillet lightly with butter.

  2. Prepare filling:
    In a large bowl, toss apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and lemon juice. Transfer to the skillet.

  3. Make the topping:
    In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts if using.

  4. Assemble:
    Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.

  5. Bake:
    Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the apples are bubbly and topping is golden brown.

  6. Serve:
    Let cool slightly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
